I've had those same thoughts many times, too. I think that even though these times can be so crazy with such little ones, they are so sweet and will be fondly remembered. I think that "no whining" rule is a good idea. It's better to focus on the good things.
Also, I love your hat. Did you make it? I have not found a good hat yet this winter. I fear I may not. There's still a little time...
